Bitcoin FAQ
Common questions answered clearly and without hype.
What is Bitcoin and how does it work? +
Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency created in 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It operates on a peer-to-peer network using blockchain technology — a public ledger that records every transaction. No central bank, government, or company controls it. Transactions are verified by a global network of computers (miners) using cryptographic proof of work. There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin, making it a scarce digital asset.
Is Bitcoin safe to buy in 2026? +
Bitcoin as a network has never been hacked in over 15 years of operation. However, individual wallets and exchanges can be compromised. The key risks are: storing Bitcoin on an exchange (use a hardware wallet for large amounts), losing your private keys (back up your seed phrase), and price volatility (Bitcoin's value can drop significantly in short periods). In India, use regulated exchanges like CoinDCX, WazirX, or ZebPay. Always enable 2FA and store significant amounts in a self-custody hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor.
What is a Bitcoin halving? +
A Bitcoin halving is a pre-programmed event that occurs every 210,000 blocks (approximately every 4 years) where the reward miners receive for adding new blocks to the blockchain is cut in half. This mechanism controls Bitcoin's supply rate. The most recent halving in April 2024 reduced the block reward from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. The next halving is estimated around April 2028, reducing the reward to 1.5625 BTC. Historically, halvings have preceded major bull markets due to reduced new supply entering circulation.
How do I buy Bitcoin for the first time? +
The simplest way for Indian users is through a regulated Indian exchange. We recommend CoinDCX or WazirX for beginners — both support UPI and bank transfer, allow you to start with just ₹100, and complete KYC in under an hour. For global users, Coinbase (US/EU) is beginner-friendly. See our complete India buying guide or exchange comparison for a full breakdown.
What is the difference between a hot wallet and a cold wallet? +
A hot wallet is connected to the internet (exchange accounts, mobile wallets like Trust Wallet). It's convenient for frequent transactions but more vulnerable to hacks. A cold wallet is an offline device (hardware wallets like Ledger, Trezor, or Bitkey) that stores your private keys physically, making them immune to remote attacks. For amounts you don't plan to move regularly, a hardware wallet is strongly recommended. The rule of thumb: keep only what you need for trading on exchanges, store the rest cold.
